Market Research is essential to the support and further development of tourist and recreational cycling and rambling. This kind of research has been done in many countries to gain an insight into the economic significance of cycling and rambling tourism. This significance turned out to be considerable.

Who is engaged in research

In the Netherlands research is being done by National Cycling Platform among others, into the kind and volume of recreational and tourism use of the bicycle. But neither in the Netherlands nor abroad have the various surveys been aligned to each other, or even combined into joint research.

The importance of cycling and rambling to the tourism sector

An exploratory study (pdf), performed by Holcus Buiten, shows that the economic significance of cycling and rambling for the tourism sector is quite considerable. Considerable effort is now going into making an inventory of all the research that has been done by all the different parties. This inventory should show where more detailed research is needed and above all: which concrete action could be taken to further stimulate cycling and rambling.
